Clients can be offered one to one or group art therapy sessions. These can be in the form of limited or one off workshops with a theme, or as a set number of weekly sessions. Art therapy can be offered in person or online using zoom, with some clients benefiting from an online offer due to logistical or presentation related challenges creating barriers to them attending in person.
Where possible sessions should take place at the same time and in the same place every week. Initial assessment sessions are used to decide if art therapy is the right path for each client. Clients do not need any prior experience with art as the art therapist supports them to create artwork or play with materials. Some people create clear images while others explore the sensory qualities of materials or create more abstract art.
Thinking through the body with materials enables clients to be more connected to their inner thoughts and feelings and better understand themselves. Offering the opportunity to discuss art work and material explorations naturally allows clients to reflect on these from a different vantage point than they are used to. The art therapist witnessing the process clients go through offers an opportunity to reflect back to them what has been seen, clients can confirm or correct this reflection and feel seen and heard.
Sessions are tailored to meet the needs of each client, and each organisation responsible for referring clients. Art therapy is an inclusive option for many adults and children including those who struggle to verbalise feelings for any reason. This may be due to having additional needs, perfectionism with language, discussing taboo/challenging subject matter, or struggling to trust people including therapists.
